The 78th Annual Academy Awards® will bestow Hollywood's top honors on March 5, 2006 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood -- and the nominees were announced this morning at 5:30 am by Academy President SID GANIS and Oscar-winning actress MIRA SORVINO.
'Brokeback Mountain' led the noms list with eight, including Best Picture, a Supporting Actress nod for MICHELLE WILLIAMS, a Supporting Actor nod for JAKE GYLLENHAAL, a Lead Actor accolade for HEATH LEDGER -- while director ANG LEE was also recognized for his work.
Other films contending for the Best Picture prize: 'Capote,' Good Night, and Good Luck,' 'Munich,' and 'Crash.'
It's definitely a "good" morning for George Clooney -- a triple threat this year -- receiving nods for Supporting Actor in 'Syriana,' a Director nod for 'Good Night, and Good Luck,' and Screenplay recognition for 'Good Night' as well.
In the race for Lead Actor, 'Capote's' PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN, who just walked away with the SAG Award, is up against TERRENCE HOWARD ('Hustle and Flow'), Ledger, JOAQUIN PHOENIX ('Walk the Line') and DAVID STRATHAIRN for his work in 'Good Night, and Good Luck.'
Lead Actress nominations went to 'Mrs. Henderson Presents' star JUDI DENCH, FELICITY HUFFMAN ('Transamerica'), KEIRA KNIGHTLEY ('Pride and Prejudice'), CHARLIZE THERON for 'North Country' and REESE WITHERSPOON for 'Walk the Line.'
In thr Supporting Actress arena, Michelle Williams is up against 'Junebug's' AMY ADAMSCATHERINE KEENER for 'Capote,' FRANCES MCDORMAND in 'North Country' and RACHEL WEISZ, who just nabbed the SAG Award for her role in 'The Constant Gardener' Sunday.
Clooney will face off in the Supporting Actor category with 'Crash' star MATT DILLON, 'Cinderella Man' PAUL GIAMATTI, Jake Gyllenhaal and WILLIAM HURT for 'A History of Violence.'
